BOARD OF DIRECTORS - MEMBER

OVERVIEW

Spokane Sports leads economic and community development through sports tourism for the Spokane region. Operating as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Spokane Sports boasts a strong foundation in event recruitment, creation and facilitation. With established public funding sources and private support from community businesses and industry, Spokane Sports is dedicated to creating a meaningful economic and community impact in the region.

As a member of the Board of Directors, you will play a pivotal role providing strategic oversight of the non-profit, and supporting the vision for the future. The ideal candidate brings a passion for the organization's mission, is dynamic, collaborative, and an experienced professional.

ESSENTIAL ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Champion the organization's mission, vision, and initiatives
  • Participate in the selection and oversight of the CEO
  • Contribute to strategic planning and participate in annual plan assessments
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and alignment with the organization's mission
  • Aid in budget development and implementation of financial controls
  • Recruit, and support fellow board members, and conduct regular self-assessments
  • Uphold legal and ethical standards to maintain organizational integrity
  • Approve organizational policies and maintain a strong knowledge of board matters
  • Serve on assigned/designated committees to advance specific focus areas of Spokane Sports

  • Accountable: Participate in meetings of the Board of Directors, and actively participate on one or more committees or task forces.
  • Engagement: Commitment to attend key special events for organization; anticipated to be two or more annually. Be willing to serve the needs of the organization by volunteering time, energy and resources to support special event(s).
  • Knowledgeable: Prepare and stay informed about the affairs of the organization to properly perform their duty and act in the best interest of the organization.
  • Representation: Uphold and elevate the Spokane Sports brand when representing the organization with stakeholders, supporting Spokane Sports' mission and core values.
  • Composure: Demonstrate advanced communication skills, diplomacy, and tact in complex situations.
  • Awareness: Maintain an understanding of the mission and vision of Spokane Sports, either through the engagement within the local community or sports tourism industry to grow awareness both locally and nationally.
SCOPE & COMMITMENT
  • Location: Spokane, WA | Remote candidates will be considered, but will be required to attend two or more in-person meetings annually, with travel expenses paid by organization.
  • Financial Contribution Expectation: $0.
  • Status: Volunteer role, without compensation.
  • Time Commitment: 1.5hr Board Meetings, held on the first Wednesday of the month at 12:00pm PST. Engagement with committees, task forces and special events.
  • Board Size: No less than five, no more than 15 board members.
  • Board Term: Board term of three years, with each member serving up to two terms. Under special circumstances, the nominating committee can recommend a third term.
EXPECTED TIMELINE
  • July 2024: Nomination process opens for new board members.
  • September 13, 2024: Application deadline for new board members.
  • September 23-October 23, 2024: Review of Board Member applicants and interviews.
  • November 6, 2024 Board Meeting: Proposed slate of candidates from nominating committee presented.
  • November 2024: Confirmation of Board members via email, selection and non-selection.
  • December 2024: New Board member orientation.
  • January 2025: Term begins for new board members.
