The instructional assignment may encompass teaching courses across all levels in this discipline. Specific courses offered may vary by campus. Courses for this assignment may include:
  • Allied Health Chemistry
  • Beginning Chemistry
  • General Chemistry
  • Non-majors courses such as "Art and Chemistry", "Adventures in Chemistry", "The Science of Coffee"
  • Organic Chemistry (courses with or without biological emphasis)
  • Preparatory Chemistry
  • Quantitative Analysis
The Chemistry Department faculty members also recognize the importance of cultivating a supportive, transparent, and collaborative learning environment. To achieve this, we believe in leading our students by our own example. As one of the efforts, we have multiple faculty members participating in STEM-PAL (Peer Assisted Learning), which are peer-led sessions that mimic the group interactions among faculty groups. The PAL sessions allow the students to collaboratively work through tough problems, where the solutions are not always obvious or even available at the moment, with the guidance from a peer facilitator.

The department uses chemical instrumentation and computers in teaching environments. Departmental Instrumentation includes Gas Chromatography GC, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer FTIR, Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectroscopy GC-MS, High Performance Liquid Chromatography HPLC and Atomic Absorption AA Laptop computers and digital data acquisition systems are also available for laboratory instructional use.

The Chemistry Department at Sacramento City College offers a variety of courses in general, organic, and biochemistry to meet the needs of students pursuing careers in allied health, biological sciences, physical sciences, computer science, and engineering. The Chemistry Department also offers laboratory courses that provide hands-on training on tools and instruments that are commonly used in industrial settings and scientific research environments.

The Chemistry Department also offers the Chemical Technology (CHEMT) Program, which trains students for a wide variety of scientific laboratory technician career opportunities. Participating students not only will be instructed in the theory and fundamentals of chemistry, but they will also be exposed to hands-on training with lab equipment and sophisticated state-of-the-art lab instrumentation. Students who satisfactorily completes the program will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement. Students who complete the program may also qualify for an Associate in Science degree by fulfilling the Graduation Requirements. Notably, the Chemistry Department also has a robust Undergraduate Research Program (URP), which allows students to operate instruments (e.g. HPLC, LCMS, GCMS, IR, AA), conduct experiments, gain actual research experience, and present their results. Having actual scientific research experience is very rare for 2-year institutions due to limitation of budget and instrumentation, but the Chemistry Department has recognized the value in preparing students to be ready for laboratory work, which is essential if they decide to transfer to a research-focused 4-year university.

Starting in Spring 2023, with the completion of the new Natural Sciences Building, we are excited to have the opportunity to move into a brand-new building with new possibilities. We also look forward to more opportunities to work and collaborate with our Biology colleagues, whom are now located on the same office space with Chemistry.
