Job Description

This position will be based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania or Washington, D.C. FIRE operates on a hybrid work schedule that allows for a mix of in-the-office and remote work for eligible employees.

Position Description

FIRE is seeking a talented and driven Research Data Manager to join our dynamic team. The Research Data Manager will play a pivotal role in elevating FIRE's research capabilities by standardizing data quality and organization across our research initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a passion for defending free speech, a strong background in data management, and the ability to implement best practices to enhance our research outcomes.The duties for this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Ensuring data quality.
    • Audit current data practices and provide recommendations for process and efficiency improvements.
    • Develop, implement, and maintain standardized protocols and procedures for data collection, organization, and maintenance to ensure consistency and accuracy across all research projects.
    • Ensure our data practices comply with current best practices and ethical requirements and commitments.
    • Conduct regular audits and quality checks to assess data integrity, identify errors or inconsistencies, and implement corrective measures as needed.
  • Facilitating data organization.
    • Collaborate with project owners to design and maintain databases, data dictionaries, and documentation to facilitate efficient data retrieval, analysis, and reporting.
    • Provide recommendations for data storage, data warehousing, and display solutions.
    • Oversee the data platforms and tools used.
    • Create automation for data cleaning, manipulation, and transformation tasks to prepare data for analysis.
  • Collaborating with staff.
    • Collaborate with research staff to understand data requirements, provide guidance on data collection methods, and establish data management plans for each project.
    • Provide training and support to research staff on data management tools, techniques, and protocols.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to leverage data insights for strategic planning, advocacy efforts, and communication initiatives.
Stay abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in data management and research methodologies to continuously improve FIRE's research capabilities.

This position will also perform other support functions for the day-to-day operation of FIRE and will frequently collaborate with other staff members and departments on general duties and specialized projects.

This position involves a minimal amount of travel. Although projected to be rare, there may be some occasional work on weekends and evenings.

The expected start date for this position is as soon as possible.
Qualifications

A candidate must also be able to demonstrate:

  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • An understanding of research and research environments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Proficiency in data management software and tools such as SQL, AWS, Tableau, Powerbi and/or others.
  • Advanced knowledge of programming languages such as R and Python.
  • The ability to use sound judgment and exercise discretion.
  • The ability to pay attention to detail and ensure work is of high quality.
  • Knowledge of FIRE's mission and a willingness to advocate for that mission.
The ability to demonstrate the qualifications and knowledge of a data scientist is an advantage. Candidates must have a four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited college or significant experience in data management.
Salary and Compensation

Starting salary is negotiable and depends upon experience and education level. FIRE conducts periodic evaluations where employees may receive raises or bonuses for outstanding and excellent work.
