Lead JROTC instructor (Senior Army Instructor) (SAI) for grades 9-12.Directs, coordinates and supervises the U.S. Army Junior Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Program at Brainerd High School to which assigned in accordance with the laws, policies and directives of the U.S. Army, the Hamilton County School System, Director of Army Instruction and the School Principal to ensure that all program objectives are met.

You must be a retired Soldier and eligible for military retirement pay/benefits to qualify as a JROTC Instructor/Teacher.This generally means 20 years of active military service.

A JROTC Instructor would work alongside of other instructors in the department to provide instruction and leadership for the students that participate in our program.The instructor would be expected to participate in school and district wide professional development and to adhere to the educational expectations of the State of Tennessee and Hamilton County Department of Education.The Instructor would also work to ensure that the standards in accordance with Cadet Command Regulation 145-2 are met.

Army JROTC Instructors conduct academic classes during the regular school day.Teaching academics classes involve significant organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, and a high degree of patience.Additionally, JROTC Instructors also supervises activities like drill teams, academic bowl teams, marksmanship teams, etc., after regular school hours, both indoors and outdoors.These after school events may include physical training activities.Additionally, an Army JROTC Instructor is expected to maintain a professional military appearance in uniform, and comply with Army JROTC weight and body fat standards.

All Army JROTC Instructors are deeply involved in their communities and are expected to be an Ambassador of the military.An Army JROTC Instructor is expected to exemplify a positive image of the military at all times by conducting themselves in a highly professional manner, in both their words and their actions.


Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Instructs Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) cadets at the host high school to which assigned in Hamilton County, Tennessee at the grade level(s) prescribed by the Senior JROTC Instructor (JROTC Department Head) in accordance with the weekly training schedules and the procedures prescribed by the sponsoring military department, JROTC Department Head, and School Principal; performs integrated-curricular instructional and coaching duties and administrative/logistical requirements as prescribed by the School Administration and JROTC Department Head which do not conflict with the primary operational academic mission. Reports directly to the JROTC Department Head.

MAINTAINS KNOWLEDGE OF ACADEMIC COURSE MATERIAL AND INTEGRATED-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES INCLUDED IN THE JROTC PROGRAM

  • Reviews, studies, and comprehends subject content contained in the sponsoring military's Program of Instruction (POI) in order to ensure that presented academic instruction accomplishes designated training objectives using associated POI materials, applicable military field manuals, other associated training materials and personal experience. Remains proficient in all classroom technology.
  • Ensures qualification in integrated-curricular and adventure training activities in order to accomplish training objectives safely using personal experience, applicable military field manuals, handbooks, other associated training materials and personal "hands-on" training as required.
  • Studies and comprehends conditions/requirements in order to effectively coach an active, competitive color guard, drill team, rifle team, or adventure team using personal experience, applicable military field manuals, associated training materials and personal "hands-on" training as required.
  • Reads professional publications in order to ensure that currency is maintained in changing military doctrine and operational procedure applicable to subject content of JROTC Program using material provided by the sponsoring military department.
MAINTAINS INSTRUCTOR STANDARDS AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS IN ADDITION TO KNOWLEDGE OF ACADEMIC COURSE MATERIAL AS EXPECTED BY THE SPONSORING MILITARY DEPARTMENT FOR THOSE INSTRUCTING IN THE JROTC PROGRAM

  • Demonstrates positive personality, physical appearance and condition, bearing and neatness in order to maintain favorable representation of the JROTC Program and military in daily contact with the academic and civilian community.
  • Demonstrates the professional ability to challenge, motivate and positively influence young men and women in order to develop their character, leadership ability, self-reliance, self-confidence, responsiveness to constituted authority, moral attributes and attributes of good citizenship and patriotism.
  • Maintains proficiency in basic lifesaving methodology in order to effectively render assistance to cadets as/if required.
PRESENTS ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION TO CADETS SO AS TO MEET DESIRED LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Reviews weekly training schedules and prepares for periods of instruction in advance of schedule to ensure that learning objectives are understood, and required instructional reference materials and audio-visual aids will be available, using lesson plans contained in sponsoring military's instructional manual.
  • Presents periods of instruction in accordance with lesson plans contained in the sponsoring military's Instructional Manual to ensure that lesson objectives are understood by the cadets using procedure, instructional reference materials and instructional technology indicated in the lesson plans.
  • Administers examinations to determine if learning objectives were met using material contained in the test bank as a guide.
  • Analyzes examination results to determine if learning objectives were met and if examinations were a valid indicator of performance.
  • Maintains a record of cadet grades in order to indicate individual performance level of cadets using school's procedure and system.
  • Provides critique sheets to each cadet after each major block of instruction to determine if instructional improvements can be made using comments contained in critique sheets and guidance indicated in Hamilton County SchoolsJROTC Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
  • Maintains presence in classroom and outside training areas, when having primary instructor responsibility, to ensure the maintenance of discipline and continual safety of cadets.
  • Continually assesses own personal instructional technique and ability to ensure that the best instruction possible is presented using personal teaching experience, modern pedagogy, modern classroom technology, and through observation of other instructors' presentations.
CONDUCTS ALL LOW-MODERATE RISK ADVENTURE TRAINING IN ACCORDANCE WITH HAMILTON COUNTY RISK MANAGER AND SAFETY DIRECTOR GUIDANCE, HAMILTON COUNTY SCHOOLS JROTC SOP, AND APPLICABLE MILITARY SAFETY DOCTRINE

  • Ensures qualification in adventure training activities, for which responsible, in order to conduct training safely and protect the physical well-being of cadets, using risk assessments, procedures and directives contained in the Hamilton County Schools JROTC SOP, doctrine contained in applicable military training material and personal experience.
CONDUCTS OTHER INTEGRATED-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AS DIRECTED BY THE SENIOR JROTC INSTRUCTOR

  • Performs duties of Color Guard and/or Drill Team Coach when directed by the Senior JROTC Instructor to provide for an active, competitive, integrated-curricular activity using applicable military field manuals, available training material, and personal experience.
  • Performs duties of Rifle Team Coach when directed by the Senior JROTC Instructor to provide for an active, competitive, integrated-curricular activity using applicable military field manuals, available training material, and personal experience.
  • Performs duties of Adventure Team Coach when directed by the Senior JROTC Instructor to provide for an active, competitive, integrated-curricular activity using applicable military field manuals, available training material, and personal experience.
PERFORMS OTHER DUTIES AS REQUIRED

  • Performs administrative duties as directed by the Senior JROTC Instructor in order to accomplish requirements directed by the military, the School, and the Hamilton County Department of Education using applicable policy and procedure.
  • Accomplishes duties of Assistant Military property Specialist when approved by the School Principal and appointed by the Senior JROTC Instructor in order to maintain and secure U.S. Government property issued to the school using procedure contained in military regulations and the Hamilton County Schools JROTC SOP.
  • Provides support to the School Administration as requested, and as approved by the Senior JROTC Instructor, in order to fulfill additional duties commensurate with those of the other teacher faculty members.
  • Communicates with parents of cadets in accordance with the Senior JROTC Instructor's policy in order to maintain viable student, teacher, and parent relationships.
  • Participates in fundraising projects as approved by the Senior JROTC Instructor to generate revenues in support of the JROTC Program using guidelines provided by the School Principal and Hamilton County Department of Education.
  • Informs the Senior JROTC Instructor of projected duty hour absences and, as expeditiously as possible, notifies the Senior JROTC Instructor when illness prevents reporting for a duty day.
Qualifications

Knowledge/Education/Experience:

Qualifications (minimum):
  • Federal Certification as a Junior ROTC Instructor
  • Associate's degree or above - discipline unspecified
  • Retired from the U.S. Army in the grade of Sergeant First Class (E-7) or above
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable
Skills:
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills to deal effectively with students, educators, parents, and community members.
  • Demonstrate excellent planning, organizational, problem-solving, decision-making, and time management skills.
